Just over ten years old, Curves for Women has enjoyed incredible success since it was first founded in 1992. Evidence of this is seen in part by the rapid pace at which it began franchising - only three years after it began! Some have speculated that this is because of its founding father's extensive business experience.
Indeed, when Gary Heavin was only 20 years old and studying for medical school, he decided to take the reins at a gym that was on the verge of financial collapse. Due to his innate business savvy, Heavin was able not only to restore the business but expand it as well by adding as many as 17 new centers. Although this venture eventually had to be cut off, Heavin learned from this experience and opened up a women-only fitness center called Curves for Women.
It was based in Harlingen, Texas, and now boasts just over 8,000 franchises worldwide. With the majority - over 7,000 - inside the United States, there are also over 600 fitness centers in Canada and over 300 located in other countries.
For anyone interested in opening up a Curves for Women - also known as "Curves" - franchise anywhere in the world, now is the time to act; the company is currently looking to expand its franchises in the United States as well as in foreign countries. When looking around to start up your own Curves franchise, there are a couple of different options to be aware of. With the world map broken up into franchise territories - areas where Curves is willing to support a franchise - there is a limit of one fitness center per territory. The entrepreneur must realize that if he or she wishes to do business in a territory that already hosts a Curves fitness center, the only option is to buy up the existing franchise from the current owner. This is the decision more commonly faced by people looking to start up within the United States. It is called "resale" and it does not come as a surprise that Curves appears to be making it possible for franchise buyers and sellers to connect with one another in order to expedite the process and to keep things going smoothly for all of their stores that are currently or soon to be in a state of ownership transition. The reasons for resale often are the result of the current owners' predetermined plans sell the place after a given number of years in order to cash in on the increased value, and thereby make some money. Still, buying a Curves franchise now is a great idea due to the increasing expansion and success of the organization.
In the United States, franchise owners are selling at prices ranging widely from $15,000 on the extreme low end to $400,000 in more expensive, and profitable, locations in California, for instance. The other option consists of simply beginning a new franchise in an approved territory that does not have a Curves in place yet. This is understandably more likely to occur outside of the United States, therefore making the foreign market even more attractive.
